Sports College – European Folk High School – Skive Sportscollege

Schools and Sports College at Skive Hallerne

The short story for 3 attempts

Sports college

In 1990, Skive Badeland opened. Shortly after the opening, it was announced that Skive-Hallerne would be the developer and landlord of a new sports college next to the halls.

Skive Idrætshøjskole, which was started by a group of former teachers from Oure Idrætshøjskole, cost 8 million kroner to build.

The construction was financed through loans.

The sports college did not receive enough registrations, partly because it did not have time to be included in the university colleges’ common catalog. Therefore, the board decided to close the school before it could open.

The European Folk High School

In January 1993, the buildings were taken over by a newly founded school, the European Folk High School. The school started offering courses for civil servants from Eastern Europe in the spring of 1993. But when the school offered its first long course in the fall, it met the same fate as the Sports School and closed in 1994.

Skive Sports College

From 1994 to 1996, the buildings were used by the independent institution Skive Sports College, which rented the buildings for a year at a time.

Consequences for Skive-Hallerne

Skive-Hallerne was left with the buildings and interest costs of DKK 100,000 per month.

The failed investment in Skive Idrætshøjskole, along with declining visits to the gym and losses on the halls’ own events, caused Skive-Hallerne’s deficit to increase. This required a doubling of the municipal subsidy from DKK 3 million in 1990 to DKK 6 million in 1991.

In 1993, the city council took over the halls’ debt, as the limited liability company behind the halls had lost equity. In 1996, Skive Municipality took over the former sports college, which was transformed into the “Hedemarken” Children’s House.
