Skive Handelsskole was an educational institution first established in 1884 and existed until 2017, when it merged with Skive Tekniske Skole to form Skive College.
The years under Skive Handelsforening
The school was established in 1884 by Skive Handelsforening in Østergade 6. It was one of the first projects of the Skive Trade Association and was intended to ensure continued good conditions for trade in Skive. The first lessons were very limited: 3 times 2 hours a week in Danish, German and arithmetic.
The school closed for a short time in 1888, as the traders were not willing to give the apprentices time off to receive the training offered, and the number of students was very small. In 1891, the school reopened at Frederiksgade 21 – at Skive Realskole. This time with significantly more hours and functioned as an actual education, but still as evening classes.
In 1907, the school moved into new rented premises on Asylgade in the newly built municipal school.
In 1965, Skive Handelsstandsforening stopped running the school, which became self-governing.
The independent trade school
After the school became independent due to new legislation, there was a shift from evening to daytime teaching. With daytime classes, it was impossible to rent space at the school, and the business school had to move into its own buildings. For a transitional period, they rented the Seamen’s Home at the harbor. This is where the business school was housed until 1967, when it moved to the old Skive Technical School building at Nordbanevej 6.
There was a desire to have its own buildings. There were several bids, but they ended up choosing Arvikavej in Egeris as the place to build. In the years leading up to the new building being put into use, there was what they called a bubble school on the site. It was set up quickly and solved the space problems until more permanent solutions were found.
The new school designed by Poul Bjerre was ready for occupation in 1974.
In 1991 with Bertel Haarder’s reform, the school was transformed into an autonomous unit like the other similar schools in Denmark. The school was the owner of Skive Sports College from 1994-6 until its closure.
In 2017, Skive Business School was merged with Skive Technical School to form Skive College.
