Østergade

Østergade is an important street for traffic from the bridge and up into Salling. The street has been home to several hotels and banks. Originally, the street ran more to the north, but the direction was changed after the fire in 1715 when it burned down completely.

Interesting addresses

Østergade 1:

Skive bank was located here from the building was built in 1912/13, later Skive Diskontobank. The fine old building was demolished in 1972, when a new bank building was built on the site.

Østergade 4:

Built for Topps pastry shop by Annine Michelsen. Operated as a pastry shop until 1982, since then it has been a restaurant.

Østergade 5:

This was the location of “Skive Gæstegivergaard”, later Hotel Royal. The Hotel Royal building was demolished in 1969

Østergade 6:

Skive’s first actual school building. The building dates from 1852 and was a school until 1907. From 1878-1907 it was also a public library. In 2015 there was an attempt to demolish the building. However, after a public debate, it was saved and renovated.

Østergade 11:

Designed by Tage Hansen in funkiss style. Built 1939-40 as a hotel for commercial travelers, first Hotel Garni, then Ansgar Hotel. The hotel closed in 1962. The Workers’ Union was resident here for a number of years, after which the building was used for housing.

Østergade 14:

Originally a journeyman’s hostel for craftsmen on the roller from its construction in 1897. Only functioned as a journeyman’s hostel for a few years, at least until 1902, when it became possible to serve Bavarian beer. The building then housed a bakery until around 1970.
