Hans Richard Brøcker (1896-1971)

High court lawyer H.R. Brøcker was a lawyer in Skive, and a prominent personality who led several libel cases, especially against the newspapers in the city.

Brøcker originally came from Køge, where Brøcker’s father was a lawyer. Educated Cand. Jur. In 1919 in Roskilde, lawyer from 1922 and high court lawyer from 1925.

In 1929, Brøcker moved to Skive and started his practice at Nørregade 21.

In Skive, Brøcker got into verbal fights with many people and filed several libel cases. The newspapers in the city were particularly vulnerable to these. The libel cases ended up costing Carl Hansen editor of Skive Folkeblad his job after Brøcker was awarded a large compensation.

After Brøcker was awarded a large compensation in 1938, he used the money to start his own newspaper “Skiv-Posten”. The newspaper was short-lived, existing from 1938-39. Brøcker himself blamed the other newspapers for pressuring advertisers not to use the newspaper, which is why it couldn’t survive.

After Skive-Posten closed, Brøcker was still critical of the press and published the book “Dagspressen”, in which the Danish press was severely criticized.

After the liberation, Brøcker became locally famous for defending people who were accused of their activities during the war. In particular the defense of local Nazi leader Lothar Jeppesen. In general, Brøcker ensured that sentences were lenient or dropped.
