Edvard Philip Smidth (1807-1878)

Edvard Philip Smidth was the first royally appointed mayor of Skive 1869-1877 after the reform of local self-government that restored the title, in addition to being shire and town bailiff in Skive and Salling.

Smidth was born at Moseby Rectory on Falster in 1807. He became a student in 1825 and graduated with a law degree in 1829.

After graduating, Smidth worked as a civil servant first on Lolland-Falster and then on Funen. In 1823, he was appointed chancellor’s council before becoming town bailiff in Skive and shire bailiff in the Sallingland lordships the following year.

After the reform in 1868, when the position of mayor was restored, Smidth also became mayor of Skive market town.

Smidth retained the post until 1877. The following year Smidth died and was buried in Skive cemetery.

Smidth was married to Karen Cathrine Berg in 1837.
