Apoteker Norgaards Børnehave is Skive’s oldest daycare center, originally established as “Apoteker Norgaards Børneasyl” on Asylgade, which it would come to give its name to.
Established in 1882 as Apoteker Norgaards Børneasyl on what would later be called Asylgade 4. The children’s asylum was Skive’s first daycare center, where workers’ children could be looked after while they had to go to work. Before this, other solutions had to be found or the children had to stay home alone. The children’s asylum was a gift from the pharmacist Norgaard and his wife, who were responsible for several charitable ventures in the city, and the children’s asylum was therefore a self-governing organization from the start, as it preceded the state’s operation of kindergartens.
From 1907, non-dependent children could also be admitted to the kindergarten, and the attendance of the children had to be monitored.
In 1921, the children’s asylum closed temporarily as there were not enough children enrolled. The building at Asylgade 4 was rented out to the library association until 1923 when the children’s asylum reopened.
In 1923, the city took over a number of the children’s asylum’s fixed costs, and parents paid for care according to their ability. Prior to this, operations had been based on either bazaars where money was raised or general charitable donations.
In 1949, a major renovation of the old building on Asylgade took place, expanding the number of children from 33 to 50. The name was changed to “Norgaards Børnehave” at the same time, as the children’s asylum was considered outdated. During the same period, two more kindergartens were opened in Skive. Norgaards Kindergarten was no longer the only daycare center in the city.
In 2004, the kindergarten moved from Asylgade to a newly built building at Jeppe Aakjærsvej 18.
In 2023, Skive Municipality decided to terminate the agreement with the kindergarten, so its continued fate is uncertain.
