Resenlund

Resenlund is a group of buildings located on Strandvejen in Skive. Originally built as “Krabbehus Sanatorium” to treat tuberculosis patients in 1905, the building has since been used for several purposes and is now mostly residential.

The time as a sanatorium

In the years leading up to 1900, understanding of tuberculosis grew, and Denmark built the first sanatorium to treat the disease “Vejlefjord Sanatorium” in 1900.

There was a desire to build many more for the large number of patients, especially for those who were less able to afford the often expensive treatment. The dairy associations, led by the later mayor of Skive, Carl Hansen, decided to establish their own sanatoriums for their members.

The dairy association collected a small amount of money from all members, and they wanted to create two sanatoriums, one on the islands and one in Jutland.

The Jutland sanatorium was built in Krabbesholm Nørreskov, which had been sold from Krabbesholm. It was therefore named Krabbehus Sanatorium.

The building was designed by architects Bernhard and Valdemar Ingemann, with room for 101 patients. The main building was divided down the middle with the west side for female patients and the east side for male patients.

Over the following years there was development in the area and in 1942-45 there was a major remodeling with an extension. However, this was only to last a few years. With the discovery of the pencil, new treatment options became available and there was no longer a need for sanatoriums for tuberculosis patients.

Time as a home for the mentally handicapped

In 1958, the buildings were taken over by Jysk Åndssvageforsorg, at the same time the name was changed to Resenlund. Resenlund was a subdivision of the institution in Hald Ege and had room for about 200 residents. It functioned until the 1970s, when the institution was no longer considered to be up to date, there was a development from large centers to institutions with private rooms or housing for the inmates.

Taken over by the county in 1980, renovated and fewer residents, who were to have single rooms as far as possible. The number of residents continued to be reduced, with a view to actual closure.

While the number of residents decreased, the buildings were used for other purposes, for example, FOF and AOF used the buildings to hold courses. In 1993, a refugee center was opened to receive refugees from ex-Yugoslavia. The refugee center closed again in 1996.

After Viborg County’s sale to Kaj Ove Madsen

When Viborg County wanted to get rid of the buildings, there were many wishes about who should take over. Skive Municipality was a possible buyer, but Resenlund was sold to local contractor Kaj Ove Madsen in 1996.

Between 1990 and 2002, there were many visions of what to do with the buildings. There was a particular desire for it to be a cultural center, which ended up being a long way towards being realized. Jacob Jensen Design had drawn a number of possible projects, but in the end it was very expensive. It took so long that Kaj Ove Madsen abandoned the project in 2002.

Since then, Resenlund has mostly been used for housing, but with several other municipal and cultural features. Music events are held on the lawn at Resenlund, and Resenlund Open Air is held in connection with the Skive Festival. In the buildings have been, among other things:

Conservation Center: Moved to Resenlund in 1991 from Østerbro in Skive. The conservation center secured museum objects for posterity. The center closed and moved from the building in 2018/19, after which Kaj Ove Madsen took over the building, which was demolished.

Krabbeshus Heldagsskole: A special school for autistic children, opened in 1997 where the municipality rented the building from the municipality.

Det Jyske ensemble: The ensemble moved to Resenlund in 2000 from Skive Seminarium. In 2008 they moved from there again to Viborg Music School.

Music school: in the period 2005-2017 there was a music school at Resenlund. From 2005 to 2007 known as Salling-Fjends Music School, after the municipal merger Skive Music School. In 2017 moved to new premises on Asylgade.
