Asbjørn Thomsen is a former local politician and Social Democratic mayor of Sallingsund Municipality from 1986-1990.
Thomsen trained as a teacher at Skive Seminarium and worked as a teacher at Roslev School for three years after graduating. From 1974 until his retirement, he worked as a teacher at Glyngøre School.
Thomsen served one term as mayor for the Social Democrats. This created internal divisions within the Social Democratic group due to Thomsen’s support for the privatization of a number of municipal organizations. In the last privatization, private companies took over road maintenance and 12 municipal employees were fired. The 1989 election went badly for the Social Democrats, who lost 2/5 of their members in the municipal council, and Thomsen resigned from the party.
In the following election in 1993, Thomsen ran for a citizens’ list and was elected to the city council under it. There was a desire to regain the position of mayor, but he did not succeed.
