Flemming Eskildsen (1948-)

Flemming Eskildsen is former mayor of Sundsøre municipality 1990-2006 and mayor of Skive 2007-2013.

Eskildsen was born in Djursland and spent his childhood there, on Mors and in Himmerland. His first long association with the Skive region came when he was stationed at Skive kasserne during his military service.

Eskildsen was trained as a teacher at Nørre Nissum Seminarium 1966-71. After graduating, Eskildsen taught at schools near Langå and Harlev.

In 1979, Eskildsen moved to Fur, where he was offered a job as school inspector and teacher at Fur School.

Politician in Sundsøre municipality

Eskildsen had no real plans to enter politics, but was contacted by Arne Jensen, who was chairman of the school board, and encouraged to run for election to the municipal council to strengthen Fur’s position. In 1985, Eskildsen became part of the municipal council for Sundsøre Municipality under the Non-Political List.

After three years, Eskildsen joined the Liberal Party, became the leading candidate in 1989, and was elected mayor of Sundsøre Municipality in 1990.

As mayor of Sundsøre, Eskildsen worked extensively for redistribution between municipalities. For a number of years he was chairman of “Det Skæve Danmark”, an association of mayors from 103 smaller municipalities that worked to give political advantages to outlying municipalities. The association closed in connection with the 2006/7 structural reform. Even after the structural reform, Eskildsen has been an advocate for not overlooking peripheral Denmark.

Mayor of Skive municipality

After the structural reform and the end of Sundsøre municipality, Eskildsen had originally intended to retire from politics, but at the urging of the Liberal Party, he continued and ended up becoming mayor of Skive municipality 2007-2013, after which he retired from politics and handed over to Peder Kirkegaard.

As a person

Eskildsen is well known for his love of music. The morning song at Fur School became the Folk High School song for meetings in the municipalities. He knows a wide range of songs and, according to his colleagues, often chose the more obscure ones. Similarly, Eskildsen often takes his guitar with him so he’s ready for some music.

Voluntary organizations are not only something Eskildsen advocates politically, but he has participated in a number of them himself. These include Kassehuset in Glyngøre, where he worked to organize entertainment in the town until 2022.

Eskildsen is married to Anne and has two sons.
