Skive Skytteforening, originally known as Skive Skyttekreds, is a sports shooting club with roots dating back to the late 1800s and the formation of shooting clubs.
Historical context
As part of the popular revival specifically based around Grundtvigianism, sports and sports associations emerged. The first of these was the establishment of shooting clubs. In Skiveegnen, a large number of shooting clubs emerged in both Salling and Fjends. The associations often brought other events with them, especially gymnastics was widespread. There was often a strong ideology associated with the associations, whether the idea of the associations was defense against external enemies or as guarantors of the constitution.
The early days of the target shooting circle
The first association was established in 1869 by a group of local men led by postmaster Niels Christensen. Unlike the other local associations, the association was ideologically anchored in the Right Party. In 1871, the circle received its flag as a gift from a number of women in Skive, and it is from this event that the association typically celebrates its anniversaries.
However, as early as 1872, the circle ceased to exist for a time. Re-established in 1879, problems quickly arose due to the political stance taken, the unconditional support for the Estrup government, and the reluctance to establish a gymnastics team, resulting in the resignation of the board.
However, the association survived, and in 1898, a gymnastics team was established in connection with the circle.
From the World Wars to the present day
World War I caused problems for the club. During the First World War, membership was very small and during the occupation, the German occupying forces destroyed the club’s buildings and course, resulting in financial problems for the club.
However, after the war, membership increased after the wars and the club survived again.
In 1977, a new large shooting center was built in Egeris, with a covered range the following year.
In 1988 and 1992 Jørgen Herlufsen participated for Skive Skytteforening in the Summer Olympics.
