Skive Trav, originally Nordvestjysk Væddeløbsbane, is a horse racing track located on Flyvej 2 just south of Skive. Nationally known as the trotting horse Tarok and Tarko’s driver Jørn Lauersen.
The original track was founded in 1948, with the first motor race on June 13 and the first horse race on July 25.
In 1966, the track’s old site was expropriated, as the Skive barracks were to be located at the old location in Brårup. There was a lot of debate about whether the track should be closed completely or moved to near Herning. However, the local forces won and a new track was created at Flyvej 2.
From 2023, the official name of the track is BioCirc Trav Arena Skive, after a sponsorship agreement was signed.
Motorcycle racing on the track
Although Skive Trav is a horse track, it has a long history of motorcycle racing.
The first motor race on the track was even before the horse track was officially inaugurated. There was a desire to use the track for motor racing to create the best business base possible. However, in the opening year, the government banned motor racing all year round to save fuel due to the economic and supply situation in Denmark in the post-war years. The racecourse and Skive Motor Club worked quickly to prepare the track before the ban came into effect, and the first event took place on June 13, 1948.
That same year, Skive was granted an exemption from the ban, and on August 1, the Jutland Championships were held
In the following years, the track was repeatedly used for motor racing, with complaints from riders who felt the track surface suffered under the vehicles.
In 1956, a major event was held, with Danish championships in a total of 8 categories. At the time, this event was the most visited event in Skive’s history with 16,000 guests.
