Gerhard Johan Nikolaj Norgaard (1842-1905)

Gerhard Norgaard was a pharmacist and town elector in Skive. After becoming a cand. pharm. in 1864, Norgaard bought the Skive Løve pharmacy on Slotsgade 2 in 1868. The pharmacy was sold in 1904 to pharmacist Møller.

Norgaard managed to run a very profitable business and used his fortune for a wide range of charitable causes in the city. He set up a workers’ scholarship, an old people’s home and a children’s asylum (a kindergarten for workers’ children), which Asylgade in Skive is named after.

In addition, Norgaard and his wife Petra Magdalene Norgaard (née Feller) donated DKK 100,000 to the building of Skive Church, a project that had otherwise stalled due to lack of funds.

Norgaard held positions of trust in Skive City Council and as chairman of the hospital board.

A year and a half before his death in 1905, Norgaard and his wife moved to Copenhagen so that Norgaard could have an operation and specialized medical treatment. The funeral was attended by several prominent Skiveites, including Mayor Holm for Skive City Council and Pastor Bahnson for Skive Church.

Norgaardsvej in Skive is most likely named after him.
