Breum brewery

Breum Bryghus was a brewing company located in Breum – on Klostervej 5 in the years 1883-1971. From then until 1977, the company continued without production, but the buildings were used as a warehouse.

Founding and early years

The company was founded by Anders Knudsen. The brewery was responsible for malting the grain itself, and private individuals could have their grain dried at the facility.

Anders Knudsen tried to sell the brewery in 1901, but was unsuccessful. The brewery was taken over by his son Morten Knudsen in 1916.

In 1918, the business was sold to Søren Sørensen, a trained brewer from Løgstør Bryghus.

Søren Sørensen and sons

Under Søren Sørensen, production was expanded in several ways. In 1925, production of bottled beer began, before that only beer tankers were sold.

In 1936, must production was made possible, and Breum Bryggeri was the first brewery in Denmark to sell apple juice. Subsequently, the company was also known as Salling Mostfabrik.

As a result of the shortage of imported goods during the German occupation, the brewery helped with substitute products, including drying beet slices for coffee substitutes and pressing sugar from sugar beets.

In 1952, modernization of the machinery was initiated and the old machines were donated to the industrial museum in Aalborg.

In 1959, sons Egon and Georg Sørensen took over the factory, which they ran until production stopped in 1971.

At the time of writing in 2023, the parts of the factory that still exist are used for residential purposes.
