Karolinegade is named after widow Caroline Ebbensgaard from Pallisbjerg near Staby. After buying Gl. Skivehus and its grounds in 1872, parts of the land north of Østergade were sold off. This area included what is now Karolinegade. In 1897, the street was named after her.
From its inception, the area was considered arable land and taxed accordingly until the expansion of the city limits.
