Tambohus is the name of Skive Youth School’s main building on Frederiksdal Alle and has been home to Skive Youth School since the 1960s.
The early years of Skive Ungdomsskole
The development of youth schools in Denmark took off in the 1940s after it was decided by law in 1942 that youth schools should be established in all the country’s market towns. The youth school in Skive is one of the many youth schools that were established in the 1940s. The Youth School Act was passed on July 4, 1942, when it was assessed that young people had a need for activity, guidance and learning in their free time, as a consequence of the high unemployment, lack of balance in education and the threat of undemocratic currents in Europe that existed at the time. Youth schools were established to strengthen young people’s education and democracy by offering classes and courses after school and as evening classes.
In the 1960s, there was a shift in the development of youth schools. In Skive, this shift can be seen in the investment in the Youth School’s own premises. Tambohus was ready for occupancy in the winter of 1962/63 and the building was officially inaugurated on February 2, 1963. The building was named Tambohus after the town’s drummer “Tambour”, who was housed under the church hill.
Secondary school from 1970-2000
Over the coming decades, Skive Youth School offered a wide range of activities, including music school, day high school, scouts, leisure club, association meetings, youth music groups, etc. The leisure clubs in particular took off in the 1970s and over time there were as many as 9 leisure clubs under Skive Ungdomsklub. These included Brårup, Resen, Hem, Rønbjerg, Hald, Højslev and Tambohus itself. The leisure club in Højslev was the first actual club and it functioned very much as an independent youth club.
From 1970 to 1990, the declining number of children in Skive municipality meant that the student potential for Skive Youth School was 15% lower, but this has not affected the number of students, which has remained stable between 640 and 700 students during the period.
The youth school today
Skive Youth School still provides a variety of educational programs for young people aged 13-18 years old. The school’s activities range from sports and movement, creative expression with workshops, outdoor activities to social events such as trips and parties. In addition, Ungdomsskolen currently runs 9 leisure clubs, including Brårup, Resen, Durup, Jebjerg, Oddense, Ramsing, Selde, Højslev and Tambohus.
In addition, there are summer school stays at Vester Vandet, ski trips, cabin trips and many more excursions. Skive Youth School also runs Skive Skating Rink at the post office square every year.
