In October 2024, Skive got its 3rd gable mural, the second in the series “Nature in the City” painted by artist Lise Vestergaard. Like the others in the series, the work is funded by Skive Municipality’s urban development pool, the Spar Vest Foundation and Norlys Vækstpulje.
“Back to Nature”
Lise Vestergaard has painted on all 3 north-facing gables of the office hotel “På Torvet”, located at Posthustorvet 4 / Vestergade 1. The work is titled “Back to Nature”
It is Skive Kunstforening’s gable painting committee, together with Skive Visual Arts Council, who decided that Lise Vestergaard should be allowed to decorate the facades of the office hotel. The work illustrates a story about a boy who finds a hole in the white brick facade and crawls into it. On one gable you see the boy on his way into the wall, the middle section is decorated with green creepers, and on the largest gable the boy appears surrounded by the green nature – plants and flowers.
Lise Vestergård has created several gable paintings in Silkeborg, Aarhus, Løkken and Horsens. She started her artistic career at Krabbesholm, where she began working with Trash-Art at an early age. She graduated from the design school in Kolding, is inspired by graffiti and street art and paints with climate consciousness as an overall theme.
Historical address
At the northwest corner of the current Posthustorv, there was probably a church and cemetery. In 1897, in connection with an extension to Nielsens Klædefabrik in Vestergade 1, graves and cut granite stones were found there, presumably from the church mentioned in 1304 as dedicated to Saint Peder. It was not archaeologically investigated at the time. Some boys rummaged around the site and found coins and skeletal remains. As a boy, E. A. Rosleff found a wooden cross in one of the graves, which he donated to the museum in 1956. In the cover letter, he has described the find in vivid detail. The story can be read in the book from Skive’s 650th anniversary.
