Thomsensgade 2 – gable painting

In 2024, Thomsensgade 2 was decorated with Skive’s second gable mural.

Rental property

Thomsensgade 2 is a two-story house built around 1907 in what was then Skive Landsogn on the grounds of Ny Skivehus Hovedgård, matr. 7 ar. The plot is 207 m2. In connection with the incorporation of several streets in the market town municipality, the property became part of Skive Municipality in 1925.

There are 4 2 bedroom. apartments in the property. A shoemaker’s workshop was run from Thomsensgade 2 for several years from the 1920s until well into the 1960s. For a time, widow Mathilde Jensen owned the property.

Mathilde Jensen

Mathilde Jensen was from Hald and came to Skive in 1908, where she got a job as an editor at Skive Folkeblad. She was involved in the move from Nørregade to Torvegade in 1910 and saw Marius Jensen, Neerup and Carl Hansen as editors. She married bicycle dealer Hans Jensen from Sønderbyen in 1913 and stopped working when their family soon grew. Jensen had a shop on the corner of Nørregade and Thomsensgade. In 1938, she lost her husband and was left alone with their 5 children.

Parking space on the plot?

In 1973, the property was owned by Mathilde Jensen, who was 85 years old at the time. On her behalf, a request was made to Skive Municipality to see if they were interested in taking over the property for parking spaces.

The city engineer wrote that the property had been classified in group 2 on the overview plan according to the law on redevelopment, i.e. a property that did not meet today’s requirements, but without being condemnable. In Skive’s center plan, model 2, the property was located in a predominantly residential area.

It was assessed that the area together with the small area on the corner of Thorupsgade and Thomsensgade could be converted into a parking lot for 12 cars, and that it would be attractive due to its proximity to the pedestrian street. However, the city council replied to the owner that they were not interested in buying.

Gable mural

The property is now owned by a residential rental company. In 2024, the east gable was decorated by the artist Eske Touborg, who had previously painted the gable in Skive in 2022. The motif – showing a child playing on a sandy beach with summer and blue sky – aligns with the overall theme “Nature in the city”. Like the others in the series, the work is funded by Skive Municipality’s urban development pool, the Spar Vest Foundation and Norlys Vækstpulje.
