Skive Music School is the result of a merger of music schools in Salling and for a while Fjends. The music school has been in operation since 1968, has had MGK from 1998 and from 2011 decentralized MGK teaching. Skive Music School has nurtured many talents.
The start in Oddense
Skive Music School was founded on September 5, 1968, the date of the establishment of Salling Music School in Oddense, the oldest of the later merged music schools.
Teacher Otto Lindum was the assistant conductor of the Salling Fiddlers, who since 1934 had gathered music lovers to play together in the orchestra, which despite its name played classical orchestral music. The Salling Fiddlers, who celebrated their 90th anniversary in 2024, are still active and occasionally give concerts.
Based on the average age of the orchestra in the late 60s, Otto Lindum could see that the amateur symphony orchestra needed new musicians. He therefore suggested starting a music school. At first it was called Salling Spillemænds Musikskole and functioned through the idealistic efforts of the teachers and a modest student fee. It was only later that municipal subsidies were introduced and the name was simplified to Salling Music School.
Salling Music School provided musicians for the orchestra and it was so successful that the orchestra had to be split into two – a symphony orchestra and an entertainment orchestra.
Skive Music School with Otto Lindum at the helm
In Skive in 1975, some music teachers had set up a music school called “Jysk Musikakademi”, but it wasn’t until Otto Lindum, in addition to his job as a music teacher at the seminary in 1977, also became the head of Skive Musikskole – as it came to be known – that it really developed. In addition to classical instruments, Skive also taught piano, electric organ, guitar, singing and playing together in small rock groups or jazz bands – big bands.
In 1988, after years of hard work, Skive Music School established a “postgraduate program” that qualified students for admission to the music conservatory.
Salling Fjends Music School and MGK in 1998
In 1998, Viborg County set up MGK (Musikalsk Grundkursus) with headquarters in Skive and satellites in Thisted and Viborg. The MGK brought together 200 students once a week for group lessons, but individual lessons also took place in Viborg and Thisted.
In 1996, a cultural region collaboration between the 5 municipalities in Salling and Fjends was started. In 1998, Salling and Skive music schools were merged and the music school offer was extended to all the municipalities in the cultural region collaboration under the name Salling- Skive-Fjends Music School – though soon under the simplified name Salling-Fjends Music School.
Music school at Resenlund from 2005
In the fall of 2005, the Music School moved into Musikkens Hus in completely renovated premises at Resenlund. A new concert and banquet hall was built on the top floor.
In connection with the municipal reform that came into force on January 1, 2007, Fjends became part of the new Viborg Municipality, and the name of Salling-Fjends Music School was changed to Skive Music School.
In 2007, Otto Lindum retired as head of the music school. He was replaced by Peter Bæk, who was head of Skive Music School for the next 10 years. During that period, Skive Music School had premises at Resenlund. In 2017, the music school moved to newly refurbished premises in the old library in Asylgade in Skive.
The move to Asylgade provided a more central location and in some areas better facilities with a large hall for concerts.
MGK Midt Vest 2011
MGK is a 3-year state-funded education. The goal of the program is for the student to achieve a level that enables them to continue on to a higher music education, for example at one of the country’s conservatories. The basic music courses in Central and West Jutland were merged from 2011. MGK MidtVest is housed at Holstebro Music School, but offers decentralized teaching in Skive, Viborg and Herning.
Skive Music School in Asylgade 2017
In 2017, Anja Brejner Højgaard became head of Skive Music School, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018.
Anja Brejner Højgaard trained as a teacher in Skive with music as her main subject and then studied at the Music Conservatory in Aarhus. She has taught at Skive Music School since 1998, when she attended the seminary. Here she started as an hourly teacher with a junior orchestra and a theory class. From 2002-2016 she was conductor of the Salling Choir in Oddense, and in 2007 she started the Skivee-egnens Herrekor, which she led until summer 2016.
Several well-known musicians Mads Langer, Dunè, Brdr. Baumgartner in Popfilter, members of Carpark North and Superheroes led by Thomas Troelsen all have in common that they started their musical career at Skive Music School.
Otto of the Year
Kulturelt Samråd Skive awards a lighthouse award called “Otto of the Year”. It is named after its first recipient in 2018, the founder of Skive Musikskole Otto Lindum.
The winner of the award is appointed by the Cultural Council’s board – “Otto of the Year” must go to a Skiveite who has contributed significantly to the culture of the Skive region.
