Skive Malerlaug is an association for paint shops in Skive founded in 1888.
The association was founded by the three master painters Palmblad, Himmelstrup and Thorndahl. In its early years, the guild functioned like any other guild as a kind of cartel for the otherwise independent entrepreneurs. In 1921, for example, the guild advertised in Skive Folkeblad about price reductions for painting work, which illustrates that the guild set the price level.
When the association was founded, it was called “Malerforeningen for Skive og Omegn”, but after a disagreement in the association’s first 25 years, the local painter was no longer included in the association. In 1919, the association changed its name to Skive Malerlaug.
At the association’s 90th anniversary, a so-called Laugnslade, a box for the guild’s central papers, was made and used for ceremonial purposes.
With the appointment of Jette Thomsen as alderman, the Skive Painters’ Guild became the first painting guild in Denmark with a female alderman.
